It is always fun to see species not common to where you live when you travel. Wonderful colors on this acorn woodpecker which was photographed along the coast in northern CA.

Thanks Laura, it is always fun to get the technical stuff right when photographing birds that don’t hold still. Thanks for the feedback on that it is appreciated.

you’re welcome Mike. I haven’t done too much in the way of bird shooting. I’d like to but I really need a better lens. 🙂

Laura, the lens is sure important with birds. They are so aware of you getting close.

I have a 300mm but i find that I still have to be sort of close. Plus it’s not a 2.8 which makes it difficult in the evening when they are out in our trees. 🙂

The 2.8 would be helpful in the dim light and if they would just sit still. 🙂

Thanks, they sure are colorful birds. We do not have them where we live so it is always fun to go somewhere and see a different bird and get to photograph it. Wishing you a great week.

Love this photo! I was surprised to see one in the city!! Didn’t know they could be found in the city. Shocked actually, cause I always thought they were supposed to look exactly like the cartoon character, Woody Woodpecker. Seriously! LOL! It was nice to see what a real woodpecker looked like (and hear them work). I haven’t seen another since.

Nice picture. This is a male. I learned recently that on male acorn woodpeckers the red crown meets the white forehead. On females, there’s black between the red crown and white forehead.

Celia, thanks for the kind feedback we appreciate it. We don’t have these guys here in Colorado where we live and it was fun for us as well to see a new species on a trip we took to CA. Seeing the unexpected really is a great experience. Hope you have a great day and thanks again for the feedback.
