These guys seem to be buddies. In fact, more often than not, I see the Pelicans hanging with the cormorants on this island while kayaking at oxbow bend in Teton National Park.

Great shot, Mike! Its a curious thing, but I’ve often seen the same behavior. Pelicans hanging out with Cormorants. Usually, out here, they are on some sandbar somewhere. Sometimes they’ll share a log. I have a similar shot of my own, called “David and Goliath”: http://jonrista.com/2012/08/28/david-and-goliath/

Jon, great shot as well. I guess we will need to take a closer look and try to figure out this behavior. I noticed from your blog you live in the Denver area? I do as well. You have some very strong photos. Great work.

Thank you for the kind comment. 🙂 If you live in the Denver area, we should meet up sometime. I’m very close to Cherry Creek…if you ever head out there and want to tromp around with a friend, let me know.
BTW, the “David and Goliath” photo was taken at Chatfield. I’ve seen the pelican+cormorants behavior more out there than at Cherry Creek, but either are a great place to see a great variety of birds and bird behavior.
Anyway, you can find me and contact me via facebook (link icon in the footer of my blog). My phone is hooked into facebook messaging/chat, so I’m readily contactable.

Jon, thanks for the invite. I might take you up on it once I get finished with the school year and things simmer down a bit.

I had no idea pelicans were that big!

Thanks, the cormorant, which is not a small bird, gives a real sense of scale showing just how big pelicans are.

I know, we get cormorants here in the uk but I’ve never seen a pelican in real life. It really does put them into size perspective.

Thanks, it is a cool story. I now see these guys together almost everywhere the two have similar ranges. I need to learn more about this story. I wonder if they help each other in some way with the fishing? Have a great week.

They might, as a species, but there is something more if these two particular birds stay together. Some unknown bond:) Have a good week you too!

Katrina, I think you might be right. I always see these two species hanging out together on the beaches and rocky outcrops. There must be some benefit for one or both of these guys to hang out together.

Great shot! And they really do look like fishing buddies taking a break and having a chat…

Thanks Pierre, I do think you are probably right about the fishing buddies part of the story with these guys. Hope your week ahead is a great one.

Interesting. When the white pelicans come to Alabama in the winter they also hang out with the cormorants. Or vice versa. Who knows what goes on in the minds of birds? Great shot!
