Prior to getting this photo several young elk raced across the road heading towards Mammoth hots springs closely followed by two coyotes. Once the calves rejoined the main herd the adult females grouped them together and stood guard. With this cow on lookout there was no way a coyote was going to get close to the youngsters and the same went for me.

I can hear her snorting and stomping from here. You’ve captured her intensity quite well!

Hi Eliza, yes those coyotes really put her on edge. This photo was from a long distance off and she was fully aware of me looking at her.
