On a cold winters day a ruffed grouse finds the hot spot where thermal activity below the surface has melted the snow above. Yellowstone National Park, WY.
Grouse are indeed lovely birds and it is always fun to come across one when out in the woods and this was cool given they were feeding in a thermal area. Hope you are keeping warm and enjoying the weekend.
That’s what I thought. Seems strange given there are sage grouse, ruffed grouse and pine grouse all in the Gunnision, CO area and that is not just that far from northern NM.
What a lovely bird!

Hi, do you have ruffed grouse in NM or mainly dusky grouse?

As far as I know we only have dusky grouse. I wish we had others. I’d love to see them.

I feel the same. But I’ve been pretty far north in New Mexico and have never seen anything else. 😦

I love this. I’d forgotten they look as though they’ve got pajama pants on.

Thanks Hannelie, it is always a difficult proposition to get both bird and environment in one photograph with loosing the bird.
