An evening rain left frozen pools that had just begun to thaw and clouds lingered throughout the day. Yet all in all it was a perfect hike and one just right for seeking solitude.
I spent the summer of 1977 as a Student Conservation Association volunteer in the Needles District. Nothing like the off-season (summer in the desert) for solitude. But take a gallon of water per day per person with you–and drink all of it.
The solitude just off the beaten track always astounds me, despite the large crowds everywhere else. I love the Needles District.
