Moving slowly down the trail and looking remarkably like the earth he walked on we found this American Toad. He did look a bit grumpy and reluctant for us to take his photo so we let him be as he moved along into the grass beyond.
Toads are born grumpy-looking eh? Whereas dolphins always seem to look happy. I suppose we just impart our own characteristics onto other species eh? Great photo though.
On a slight tangent, I was once walking to the pub at night while still living in England. As it was a road through a farming area I was trying not to stand in any stray mud when the mud I was trying to avoid moved. I let out something akin to a shriek and discovered it was a toad. 😀 Thankfully neither of us was harmed and we went about our respective business.
Hi Graham, Yes they are born grumpy probably because they ended up a toad not a frog. 🙂
I can relate to your story but instead of a toad my instance was a snake. I jumped and fell over on the trail and let out a shriek that my wife teases me about to this day.
I think a snake merits a shriek…assuming it was venomous of course. 😄 Falling over sounds like it could’ve made things more hazardous for you though…
Winter here in Auckland is generally wet with temperatures rarely resulting in a frost…so in that regard all is well…I just wish the houses were better insulated.
Cool shot!

It was a Rattlesnake so the shriek was warranted. I have always found wet and just above freezing to feel colder than snow.

Amen to all of that. Rain gets to you after a bit. 🙂

Yes, sunshine is good no matter the temperature. Have a great weekend and be sure to avoid those toads (kiwis) on the way to the pub this weekend.

Don’t they have the most beautiful eyes – like jewels!

They are wonderful looking eyes and if the Toad knew how we appreciated them he might have given us a smile that day.
