In what feels to be the blink of an eye spring has changed to summer. Green grass, hot afternoons and a forest that is just a bit quieter once the sun gets to work. The photo is a bit blurry but so was our encounter with the 13 Lined Ground Squirrel. We were watching a Prairie Dog Colony and there was one Prairie Dog that just did not seem like the others. He was thinner and smaller. They would stand up tall and then quickly dart to another location very rapidly. They were much more hidden in the grass as well. We tried over and over to get a good look but this is the best we got that afternoon. A fleeting glimpse of a magnificent 13 lined ground squirrel.

Seeing a new animal made me realize once again that life is so diverse and wonderful and there is so much yet to see.
Bison eats grass and then it poops,bugs eat poo and then lay eggs, grubs grow, birds break apart poo and eat the grubs, the broken apart poo fertilizes soil and new grass grows. What a wonderful cycle.

A nice Yellow Finch compliments summers leaves quite well. A male American Goldfinch enjoys a bit of shade on a warm summer afternoon.
Off in the distance a tree creeper creeps.
A Small bird in a changing big world…amazing we still have birds left at all.
Sound to take in without sound to block out.
A male Lark Sparrow pokes about in the short desert grasses of Western Colorado. A unique sparrow and thankfully one that is easy to identify correctly. If you have any good tips or a process you follow to identify sparrows they would sure be welcome.
Usually you like to keep the location of a good fishing hole to yourself. In this case it looks like the word got out. Pelicans, Cormorants, a Blue Heron, Western Grebe were all present and the Tern you can’t forget the Tern. When the fishing is good you gotta get fishing.
Fresh new leaves and a pure blue sky are waiting for something that is just like sunshine.
A little Yellow Warbler…just as pure and bright as sunshine.
The gift of spring rains are many and short lived.
