The male Snowcap Hummingbird can sure pack a whole bushel of beauty into its tiny body. That beautiful red body topped off by a magnificent white crown.

Feeding on flowers at the forests edge.

Have a great and wonderful weekend.

Just the grass greening up in a landscape filled with sage and juniper. Quiet, perhaps the sounds of Meadowlarks and Sparrows singing, an unassuming landscape in a quiet place.

Yet upon closer inspection we were provided with quite a treat. Chocolate Lily – Fritillaria atropurpurea were hidden in theses still greening grasses.

Some were on full display and added a a wonderful splash of color and gave us quite a surprise on what we thought would be a unassuming walk through an early spring landscape.

It’s nice to have no assumptions.

The Brown Jay is and conspicuous bird to say the least. We found a flock moving through the trees and calling loudly while foraging for a morning meal this day.
This bird deftly plucked the last berry from a leafless branch and quickly devoured it before moving along with the rest of the boisterous flock to find another meal.

Yellow Fritillary (Fritillaria pudica), just about 4 inches tall, but oh what a way to ring in the weekend.
Wishing you a fine day and wonderful weekend.

Identical no less with matching fur coats for those crisp spring mornings.

Even with a precarious grip we can keep hanging on.

Drop by drop
drip by drip
we get released
from winters grip

It took awhile this year but we finally ran into our first Horned Lark of 2020. He was perched upon this well worn fence post along a quiet country road a week to two back. Glad to have him back in town and seeing him brings a bit of solid rhythm to what has been a spring that’s been lacking its normal beat.

Todays post is brought to you courtesy of the forest floor. A place to discover wonders both large and small. Like the sculptural beauty of a leaf slowly working its way back to soil.

and a pine cone in all its’ glory.

So much to see in a 8 inch square.

yes, so much to see on the forest floor.

We were pleasantly surprised one recent morning when we noticed a flock of birds foraging in the distance turned out to be beautiful Gray-crowned Rosy-finches. They were busy gobbling up the remaining seeds of some plants not buried deep under a winter of snow. Beautiful birds and ones we don’t often see.
