Tree swallow

Tree swallow

Tree swallow taking a break from feeding. I got worn out just watching how much time and energy they were spending foraging for bugs over a pond and am always amazed at their ability to pull off high-speed ariel maneuvers to avoid mid-air collisions with each other.

Frost-flowers and bud.

After a stormy and snowy Saturday we went out to observe the cormorants nest building yesterday morning and were greeted by beautiful layer of hoar frost on the plants circling the lake. It was very delicate and ephemeral. The slightest breeze lifted it off the plants and within half an hour it was gone. Things that don’t last last the longest.

All dressed up

All dressed up

Male American Widgeon all dressed up for the breeding season. I have never seen a widgeon with so much iridescence in his head feathers. They usually appear a nice bright green. These appeared a golden-copper color with a hint of green. His bill and top of head were also much whiter than I had previously seen as the blue color was almost gone. Another great day at the local pond.
