Looking a bit on the grumpy side a Curved Bill Thrasher lets me know he is aware of my presence. Busted again.

Short day-Long Shadows

There’s no escaping and no mistaking this time of year. Early December, high noon, without a cloud in the sky, yet the sun casts long shadows upon a male Red-winged Blackbird with wing-bar colors faded to only a pale yellow. Short days and long shadows. A calendar and perhaps a metaphor.
Inching Along

Bringing a warm welcome to the start of another wintery month a Caterpillar inches along. We are inching are way though winter, and enjoying every moment of it, yet just like this caterpillar will emerge as a wonderful butterfly (or perhaps a moth) spring will be here in the blink of an eye. So get out and enjoy that snow before it’s melted and gone away.

Happy Friday, welcome to February and have a wonderful weekend.

Prowling the Neighborhood

We ran into this Coyote last week prowling the neighborhood.
Perhaps now we know why the rabbit population close to home seems diminished this year.
Soft Pillows

Not exactly the soft cozy type on which to lay your head but soft and inviting nonetheless.
A splash of summer

Well, yes it is only March, and winter will be hanging around, but who can resist a splash of summer just a little before it’s time.
A flash of red moving in the canopy lead us to a beautiful Summer Tanager perched overhead. These birds are specialized hunters of bees and wasps. Catching them on the wing and managing to avoid getting stung and removing the stinger by rubbing thier prey on a tree branch prior to confining their meal.

Most of our encounters with the brilliant colored males were looking through dense foliage however once and awhile one managed to land in clear sight and in camera view.

A little splash of summer on a late winters day.
Round and round

Round and round from one full moon to another.
Time is a peculiar thing.
Up the creek

Up the creek and no paddle needed.
Remnants

Remnants of fall on a winter day bringing feelings of spring. Perhaps it was the color or warm sun above.
