Hi, hope your week is off to a great start. It is indeed very difficult to predict the next location of a diving grebe. When we are photographing them we use their dives as an opportunity to sneak up further towards the shore and get closer.
Any chance you’ve come across an old National Geographic magazine about Western Grebes, by Gary Necterlein (sp?)? Beautiful work by Gary ‘way back in the ’80s. Worth looking up if you’re a western Grebe fan!

Love that golden backlighting, such a lovely, graceful couple. Those beaks are amazingly sharp. They must be spear fishers!

We had several crested grebe on the river. It became a game of anticipation where they would surface after diving!
