A porcupine peaking out from behind a lodgepole pine near Willow Creek Pass in Colorado. We seldom see theses guys while out and about so this was a treat.
What a beautiful shot! Very clear. We haven’t seen any porcupines in our neck of the woods for a couple of years. We used to at least see their tracks, if not them in person. I miss the. Hopefully some will waddle back.
Hi and thanks. We also miss seeing these guys and remember as kids they used to be around frequently but that was long ago and boy how things have changed. As we destroy habitat I reckon sighting these guys will become even more difficult. Hope your day is going well.
Great shot, Mike! Do you have any recommendations for a commercial pin-hole camera, if I’m too lazy to build a decent one myself? (I don’t think the porcupine shot was a pin-hole camera product, but if it is, I WANT A CAMERA JUST LIKE IT! *grin*
We saw one last year in Yellowstone…the guides were practically salivating when they saw it, pulled off to the side of the road and trudged through hip high snow to get good pictures of it. If I hadn’t had a wicked head cold I would have joined them. As it was I didn’t get a very good picture of it…thanks for sharing this one.
Thanks and it is a treat to see one of these guys. I used to see them while out in the mountain more frequently than I do now. Luckily we did not have to get through deep snow for the photo as he was fairly close to the road off in the trees. Hope your day is going well.
Hi Jude and thanks. I agree you sure would not wan tot hug him although from what I have read the fur under those quills is kinda soft so maybe just a little hug for this guy? 🙂

HI Ron, well this guy was not taken with a pinhole camera but for a comercial pinhole I would suggest a zero image http://www.zeroimage.com
I really like how mine works and you will find one that suits your interest there.Hope you are having a great day.

Sweet capture! I saw a young one the other day, too. All this cold must be making them hungry!

I am sure the cold is having a big effect on their hunger and driving them out more often for food. Must have been a pleasure to see a little guy.

I’m afraid I didn’t get too close as I had our new dog with us and all I could think of was to get away as fast as possible before she saw it, too! 🙂

With a new dog in tow getting away before they got a nose full of quills seems reasonable.
