With the lake resplendent in golden fall light a male Barrows Goldeneye spreads his wings on the aptly named Duck Lake in Yellowstone National Park.

        1. Hi Eliza, they can lift off but must run on the surface to do so sl do most of the diving ducks. I think the short wings are a trade off for swimming ability. It seems the dabbling ducks have longer wings and can take off directly form the waters surface without having to run.
