….they are such a lovely creature–shy, preferring the ground to the mayhem of the feeders–not given to fighting or bossing, just a lovely bird with a very distinctive call (not really a song as such), and this is a beautiful photograph of one!
Hi and you hit the nail on the head with your description of these guys, their behavior and call. What I also like is the variety we seem to have in colors and shades of colors. Some are darker and some are lighter and some have color and some don’t. SO much to look at in these little guys. Hop your day is going well and your week has been wonderful.
Hi Eliza, we have a few Chickadees that move down in elevation from the foothills to our neck of the woods in winter but for the most part it’s the Junco who are most prevalent when it is the coldest.
We have had many juncos this winter in Lincoln, NE. And a sharp-shinned hawk looking to
snatch them up. You have great bird photos. Thanks for checking out my blog.
Yes! I love them too. Have a wonderful day!

Beautiful photo. Warm little fuzzballs rolling over the snow.

Thanks, they do like to be on the ground and snow seems to not bother them at all.

Sweet thing! I love juncos, they are our only purely winter visitors, arriving in the fall and leaving in the spring.

We know when the season has changed by their arrival. Kind of a double edged sword really, love to see them, yet New England winter has arrived.

Well I guess the other side of the coin would be there departure signals the arrival of spring.

Yes. In Connecticut they leave April 15 (almost like clock work).

Thanks Sandy, junco’s beware. We occasionally have a Coopers hawk hanging around but he usually snatches a Pigeon.

Yes, slow moving doves are the hawk’s primary target. Juncos often scatter too fast.

Just glad the Junco’s get out of the way more often than not.
