HI, they typically do not stay all winter here as well. It has been a very warm fall up until this week so the proper cues for the herons departure have probably arrived here. We do however see black crowned night herons all winter.
Hi Mike this is an amazing photo!  The GBH’s I try to photograph always get spooked before I get close enough for my 600mm lens to get something as close and clear as you have here. Would you mind sharing your camera info? I love being on your mailing list. I always know when I open the NHNB email it will make me smile. Thanks for that :). Cheers,Mary EllenÂ

Hi and thanks for the thoughtful comment we really appreciate it. We used a Nikon D700 and probably a Nikon 80-400 lens for that shot. This shot was lucky as we had a clear view of the Heron. Quite often they near the reeds and we also spook them without even knowing they are present. Hope your weekend is going well and thanks again.
Hi George and thanks for the feedback and taking time to leave it. We don’t see herons much in the snow so this was a nice encounter and perhaps just a bit of luck in timing the flight photo. Hope you are having a great day.

Do they over-winter there? Ours (PEI Canada) come early and stay late, sometimes through late or early snowfalls, but they don’t stay all winter.
