Broad Tailed Hummingbird

Given my poor skills at identifying Hummingbirds, especially the females, please correct me if I am wrong again this time.

While we were out hiking last weekend this Broad tailed Hummingbird landed on a branch right in front of us on a very windy afternoon. I can’t imagine being a bird that weighs mere ounces buzzing about on a day with the wind as strong as that day but she was sure putting in a great effort. After a short rest she was off with that familiar hummingbird buzz and buzzed away on a breezy day.

  1. Mike, I don’t know whether you are right or wrong but it is an extremely small bird and hard to imagine it getting anywhere in a strong breeze never mind a strong wind. Thanks for sharing.

    1. Thanks dave, she was a fierce flier and even sitting protected in the the shelter of this tree in a small canyon you could see her feathers ruffled in the breeze. I wonder how many miles she flew that day…probably more than we hiked tenfold. Have a great weekend and thanks again for the feedback as we appreciate it.

    1. Thanks Jet, this was a fierce little bird flying in the wind that day. Even perched in the safety of this tree in a small canyon you could see her feather ruffled by the breeze.

feedback welcome
