This Merlin was sitting quietly on a post along the road near Walden Colorado. We stopped for a few quick photos and were quickly on our way leaving him to enjoy a chilly May afternoon.
Hi Rachel, at first glance we thought it might be a Kesteral however it is just a tad larger and once we got a better look found it to be a Merlin. Kesteral are beautiful birds and we see them much more often than Merlins however we always have a tough time getting a great photo.
He’s stunning.

Beautiful capture. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Merlin in the UK, but kestrels – so similar – are very common.

Thanks Jane, we think this bird had just finished a meal and was content to sit on the post while we took our photos.

Hi Elizabeth, we rarely get to see these wonderful little hawks so it put a grin on our face as well when we did. Glad to share what we see out there.
