For the next few weeks Christy and I will be presenting a handful of our favorite photos that have been previously posted on the blog as we enter the ever busy holiday season. Hope you enjoy them and have a happiest of holidays.

A few weeks ago and just a minute or two after remaking that there seemed to be no birds in the woods this particular afternoon, we came across this white breasted nuthatch doing his thing on an old cottonwood tree. Look like a nice meal is in the works.

  2. I love nuthatches and their laughing call ‘ha-haa-ha!’ It always makes me smile. It looks like a sunflower or safflower seed. Would there have been a source for that close by? They will cache seeds for later use so it may have been doing so. They are the only bird that can go head-down a tree.

    1. If there was a feeder nearby it was not close so maybe he was raiding his larder or caching for latter use this winter. I love to watch them walking upside down on the trees as it is so unique and fun to observe. Hope your day is going great and you are enjoying the holidays.

    This is so weird … our UK Nuthatch is shaped like this little fellow and runs down a tree in the same way, but his colour is so different – blues, with an orange underbelly. And a great picture, by the way.

    1. Hi, thanks for the feedback. We have a similar nuthatch here called the red-breasted nuthatch. He is bluish with a red breast but we see them less frequently around here. I posted a photo of one about a month ago. Hope your day is going great and wishing you a very happy new year.

    1. Thanks David, in a way the verticalness may be somewhat natural in that the bird spends its days walking down the tree hiding nuts and looking for insects. It’s in the nuthatches nature to be vertical just like a tree.

    1. Hi Jude, we have some like that as well, the red-breasted nuthatch. These white-breated variety ardmore common around my area and really fun to watch in the forest running down the trees. Wishing you a very happy new year.

  11. You are so lucky to capture this shot. Last week I was in the park in Seattle looking for an Owl and a white flicker caught my eye. It was a Nuthatch or a Brown Creeper. I’m voting for the Nuthatch since it was lighter in color.

    I tried to get in position to get a photo and he was off and away before I could focus. I even had my camera already out but no go… he was a quick little devil.

    1. Hi and thanks for stopping by here and leaving feedback. We were lucky watching this guy as he was busy going up and down on one big cottonwood tree for at least 10 minutes.

      It is funny you mention you were looking for an owl in a Seattle park as the last time were were in Seattle we went for a hike in Discovery park and were lucky to run across a Barred Owl and got some very nice photos.
