While there are not many birds around today the first day of February seems like a nice time to remember spring is on it’s way….someday.
Green grass, liquid lakes and one of my favorite friends the White faced Ibis will soon return again.

Looking sharp as he contemplates another try at getting seed from the bird Feeder.
This northern Flicker was just a bit too heavy to stand on the collapsible perches on our feeder although it did not stop him from giving it a go. He had to constantly work by flapping his wings to stay on the perch and I am sure he was using as much energy as he was taking in. After a few short tries he must have thought the same as he moved on to looking for food in the trees.
An American Widgeon spreads his wings as he forages on the creek. A beautiful splash of green on an otherwise cloudy afternoon.
A Black Caped Chickadee rests on a Prairie Coneflower as the winter days pass by. More clouds yet less precipitation has made this winter feel different from winters past.

On a cloudy winter day we watched as this little Red Breasted Nuthatch would stealthily sneak into the bird feeder while the flocks of sparrows and finches had their backs turned and quickly grab a seed.
She then spent much more time searching for that perfect hiding spot than spent getting the seed. Once a seed was hidden she would dart back in and repeat the process.

More like waiting it out in this case.
On nice sunny days we see these male White Crowned Sparrows perched and singing away with away with vigor. However this time, although tolerant of the steady rain, this guy had his when is this going to end face on as we both sat and watched the rain come down this afternoon.
While watching this cormorant fishing, on what by my estimation was a very rough day, I was gently reminded it is not what happens to you but how you respond as this cormorant smoothy dove under the approaching wave, popped out on the other side and kept on fishing without batting a eye.
Along the river a Belted Kingfisher waits for a moment without time.

Always looking wonderful and always on the prowl even on a quiet cloudy afternoon. Great Blue Heron working a Lagoon off the Pacific Ocean.
Their myriad of colors is alway amazing but what always stuns me are those fully feathered big beefy legs.
Up and down and up and down. These little birds never cease to amazing me with their constant motion and why do these little birds always choose such big trees?
nature has no boss
