Just a splash of yellow and quick glance back as a Savanah Sparrow sits quietly along a barbed wire fence was enough to make our day.

Loggerhead Shrike
We spotted this Loggerhead Shrike sitting tall on the barbed wire while whizzing down a quiet backroad. We quickly turned the car around and to our disbelief the bird was still perched tall taking in the afternoon sunshine. We did not get to observe the shrikes wonderful hunting behavior that afternoon but it is always a joy to see these beautiful birds.
Yellow Rumped (Myrtle) Warbler
A male Yellow Rumped Warbler of the Myrtle variety give us both a right and left profile as we followed him through the woods as he passed through our area on his spring migration. These little guys only hang around for a few weeks so it was nice albeit frustrating at times to get a little looks as these every busy and moving little birds.
Songs of Spring
Listening to a a song Sparrow singing the praises of Spring is a fine way to spend a weekend morning.

Meet Lou
Meet Lou the sweetest, oh well, the only male duck on a small pond close to home. Lou is married to Sue who we deduce is sitting on a nest full of eggs at the moment. Lou is courteous and polite and protective of Sue in just the right way.
He always prefers to make sure Sue has finished eating before he takes his meals. Standing guard and keeping his eyes open for predators.
Lou is amenable to having his portrait taken and over the course of a month or two we have indeed taken a few. A fine looking guy with a personality that is hard to beat.
So, meet Lou, the best male duck on the whole pond.
Dental Hygiene?

A short article posted at the Audubon Society’s website suggests that there is more to this commonly observed activity than meets the eye.
Western Kingbird
The Western Kingbirds have made their return to the area gracing the fence posts and barbed wire along quiet county roads. Sallying out in search of insects then returning to their perch. Patiently waiting and intently searching for their next meal. Beautiful colors, some bright, some subtle, and a wonderful sight on a drive sown a quiet road.
Merlin
This Merlin was sitting quietly on a post along the road near Walden Colorado. We stopped for a few quick photos and were quickly on our way leaving him to enjoy their afternoon.
Swainsons Hawk
We spotted many Swainsons Hawks while driving a quiet yet bumpy backroad but this one stood out. Standing tall and alert as a chilly wind more reminiscent of winter than spring puffed up those beautiful white breast feathers.
Snowcap
The male Snowcap Hummingbird can sure pack a whole bushel of beauty into its tiny body. That beautiful red body topped off by a magnificent white crown.
