Hunkered Down
With Coyotes on the prowl in the Grasslands and Great Horned Owls in the Trees nearby this Rabbit hunkers down in a small depression to survey the scene before scurrying off to into the cover of the surrounding shrubs.

The Herd
Steadily moving along as the sun rises beyond. A herd of Bison trimming the grasslands, maintaining the soil and keeping the ecosystem chugging along.

On a winter’s day.
This year winter has yet to really visit me or I to visit it.
Bad timing with the jet stream, el nino, global warming or just too much time at work?
Anyway, I just felt the need needed to post a bit of winter today before it has gone for good, well at least this year.

Misty Morning Marsh
Although the sky was clear and blue above the morning mist hung heavy on this marsh just off the shores of the Pacific Ocean making for a quiet morning walk. Knowing that the sun would shine and the mist would clear was a nice addition to the day.
The time between
The sky speaks of summer, the wind blows hard and cold and the landscape longs for the snows that have yet to arrive.
The time between winter and spring suggests there are more than four seasons.

Boys are back
Sitting high in a frosty tree top keeping a lookout or so it seems. The male Red Winged Blackbirds are back in the area. They have yet to descend to the cattails surrounding the local marsh and are hanging out high in the tree tops perhaps to get that first view of when the ladies return.

Just an hour or so
Just and an hour or so it seems was all it took for this ephemeral hoar frost to be blown from the branches surrounding a small pond and melted by the morning sun.

On a small stick
A male Downey Head Woodpecker looking for a meal on a dried stalk of dried queen Anne’s lace Usually we see these guys scurrying about in the much larger trees pecking away looking for a meal. This day we were surprised to hear the pleasant pecking of a downey head on this small plant. Surprises do come in small packages.
