First Blues

With snow still covering the fields the Mountain Bluebirds have made their return. Yes, at this point there are only a few scattered along the county roads staking out the prime real estate and empty nesting boxes, but what a welcome sight they are.

The male a brilliant blue perched upon an old fence post was a welcome sight on this mid-March afternoon.

A close second

Earlier this week we featured the Mountain Chickadee who by our accounting is the most prevalent species hanging around our neighborhood this winter. A close second,  and perhaps on some days the most prevalent species, is the Red-Breasted Nuthatch. Sitting quietly in an old spruce this particular Nuthatch presented us a nice photo opportunity on a warm March afternoon. It won’t be long before they scatter to higher grounds and prepare for breeding season but until then we savor the opportunity to listen to their honk-honk-honk from the trees nearby.

Storm…Meet Sun

After_the _snow_1

After the snow with the storm just winding down. The best of both worlds out on trail. Sun and storm becoming one. In the hills near Bozeman, MT.

For the next couple of weeks we will be posting some of our favorite posts from the past as we take a small respite from the digital world.

One winter morning

We tend to see more foxes prowling the snowfields of winter than we see each summer. Perhaps it’s the fact our daily schedules are compressed into a similar time period with the days being so short. It’s definitely easier to be out and about at dusk and dawn when the sun does not rise much before 7:30am. and sets at 5:00pm. That’s one good thing abut winter.

Beauty

She’s a beauty don’t you think?

There is just something special, call it perfection if yo will,  about how pronghorn fit in so well with the dry fall grasses in their habitat. A beauty that is laid bare and obvious. A beauty in nature’s design. A beauty we could perhaps call truth.
