On a Sunless Summer Day

While camped at the meadows edge I look into a forest half dead.

The beetles’ have had their way.

The clouds got thicker and a late afternoon shower moved in from behind.

The rain came and the skies cleared but the pines in this forest will take longer to return if they do at all.

Ecosystems are dying or being destroyed around the around the globe.

From the polar regions to the tropical jungles to the coral reefs and the grasslands in-between.

We know this to be true.

Yes, there is untold beauty all around, but it’s becoming harder to see when looking into natures mirror on a sunless summer day.

Simply Summer

It’s mid-July and the forest near my home has quieted down. On our daily walk we begin to pay more attention to those things that define a July day. Most are simple and I often overlook them.

Like the fascinating home of a spittle worm.

or a Dragonfly resting on a branch.

And how many times I walk right past a dandelion going to seed without stopping to take its photo. A true disservice to that dandelion which has put a lifetime into become such a beautiful thing.

Sometimes it is the simple things that make you say it’s simply summer today.

Sound to take in without sound to block out.

Although I posted this  a week ago I just became aware of this new study on noise in our national parks and thought it important to pass along. The link is below.

Yes it is more than just a feeling ….Noise levels in our wild places are increasing at a rapid pace and what the consequences are only time will tell. Unless we respect that silence it seems it will soon be gone.

A Prairie Dog’s Song

This song seemed to be a gentle warning call but I could be wrong. However, biologists studying Prairie Dogs have discovered they have a complex language and perhaps one day we will understand it. Another discovery that suggest we are less different and more alike on this planet.
