As the sun heads towards the horizon a group of American Bison head west towards that setting sun.
Snow still covers the ground spring is on the way.
Hope your weekend is going well and don’t forget to set those clocks ahead.

I have always found it just a little more difficult to get excited about geology than the life sciences. Maybe it is how we have come to define life or maybe the story the earth has to tell is just a bit slower and more quiet than others being told these days. However, as we skied our way past stories like thee it was hard not to look and listen with full attention.
A Canyon carved by a mighty river replete with pinnacles and basaltic columns.
Basaltic columns sandwiched between layers of rock, earth and snow.
What looked like a mud encrusted cliff had a story hidden inside…
and yes life does test things out again and again.

Peeking through the branches of a wonderful old spruce to get a glimpse of a Mountain Chickadee. With both Mountain and Black Capped busy buzzing the trees it is often difficult to tell them apart. So it was nice to get a glimpse of this one happily taking a break to get that positive ID.

A little Brown Tree Creeper using their wonderful tweezer-like beak similar to a skilled surgeon using a fine surgical instrument extracting a little nibble from the bark an old spruce tree.
While I see the trails all over the place in the snow I seldom see Voles out in the open and for good reason given how many different predators prey on them. This day I kept seeing this Vole darting in and out of a tunnel grabbing what appeared to be a quick bite to eat. They seldom stayed for more than a few seconds but is was great to get a good look and a few (albeit a bit fuzzy) photos of these small mammals.
