I love being able to photograph these guys, such an interesting bird. Taken while driving the backroads of Weld county, CO.

Thanks Sreejith, I took this shot out the car window. Birds on the country roads seem to not mind cars stopping near them. I can get much closer to them in the car than if on foot.

Thanks Cindy, We don’t really get around as much as we would like…but who does.

Thanks Wendy, I think he was getting a little miffed abut the bugs flying around his head that he was trying to make a meal of but no having great luck.He would fly off this post to try to catch one then return and wait for more to fly by.

Say, it’s the Groucho Marx of the bird world! I agree with Wendy — an interesting expression; unflappable, maybe? 😉

Hi John, I do see the Groucho resemblance all that is missing is the cigar. 🙂

THanks, we have none of these in the immediate area but if we drive just 25 miles to the eastern grasslands they are abundant. Those little horns on the males are indeed cool.

This is a great shot! We have a ton of these birds here in South East Idaho. They thrive on our high desert range land. I love birds and animals that not only do alright, but thrive where not much else does. Thanks for showing the beauty of these often overlooked little things!

Laurel, we have horned larks in Colorado in a variety of different environments. Some high altitude some lower but all are grasslands and fairly dry most of the time. These indeed are tough birds and so darn interesting to look at.
