We saw this sleepy common nighthawk resting on a fence post in rural eastern Colorado one morning. He sure looked tired after a night out hunting so we snapped a quick photo and let him get back to bed.
I am amazed he/she(?) rested out in the open. I always associate them with wooded groves, but perhaps those are not available? The fence is gray and helps camouflage, I suppose. Love shot.
Hi Eliza, We see them quite a bit here on fence posts as out east on the prairie there are no trees to be found. We also run across them sleeping well hidden on the ground once in awhile.
Delightful! I’ve known about these birds, but had never seen one until recently when I was walking a trail through some brush. The bird made a muted (sleepy?) call and hunkered down but I was able to get a shot of him, in amongst the branches. I wasn’t sure what I had until I saw this post of your’s π
Wow, amazing! We call them Nightjars over here in England π

It’s as if he is just opening a sleepy eye to see what the heck is going on, being awakened from a little nap. Lol

He was probably counting on us to drive right on by as most cars did.

Does indeed look like he had a good night on the tiles!
