Really an excellent capture. Do you mind sharing your technique? I love swallows and have tried to capture them in flight but my results pale next to yours. Thanks for posting.
Thanks Alice, our technique is to use a fast shutter speed and try to pan with the birds. Just pick one in the group and try your best to pan. To be onset most of these types of shots are not keepers but persistence pays off and sometimes a few in the bunch are good. Hope you have a wonderful day.
Thanks Mike. I have the 80-400 Nikon and understand completely your comment about “barely” being able to hold the lens stable. It is a great lens and I have gotten some good captures with birds who come to visit our feeders here in North Carolina. As a field lens, however, it is Papa Bear of a lens. Well, we just do the best we can. I do love swallows and will continue trying my best to get a capture as good as yours. Thanks.
Amithi, thanks most are not keepers for sure. We just try to pan and use as fast a shutter speed as light and DOF will allow. A sunny day sure helps. Wishing you a wonderful day.
Thanks I appreciate your comment on capturing the mood. That is indeed how it felt being amongst a large group of swallows buzzing around looking for dinner.
Michele, thanks for the thoughtful comment it is very appreciated. Swallows are a treat to watch and I am glad you could experience it in this photo. Hope you have a great weekend.

Certainly understand about “most are not keepers”. What lens are you using? Thanks.

These were taken with a nikon 70-400 mm handheld. I find panning fast easier handheld and I can just barely hold that lens stable enough to pan.

Thanks for the tip. I try panning, but keep losing the birds. Just need more practice I guess. Great shot.

Amazing capture! I only manage something that crisp if they’re sitting still – I second Alice’s request. 😉

Thanks for your explanation. That one would have a lot of unusable pictures is expected, I’ll try again.

Super picture, but what sort of Swallows are they? Our UK migrants have longer tails.

Hello Mike, yes indeed. I just “shot” a few dragonflies which I will post soon.

Looking forward to seeing the dragonflies. Those little creatures are one tough subject to photograph especially in flight.

What is most beautiful about this image is the suspension of time within a moment….Lovely feeling of quietness as if I can hear nothing but the air
