An American Goldfinch was working over these thistle plant pretty good for an afternoon meal at the Bosque Del Apache national Wildlife refuge. From the looks of it this chubby guy is well versed at extracting thistle seeds.

I’m always in awe of nature and how it provides the means for all of it’s creatures to live and survive. You’ve captured this little guy very nicely with your camera lens. I love his colours!

Thanks, I was surprised just how colorful this guy remained in the winter non-breeding season. Many others in his group we much less colorful. Must have been a goo diet and plenty of food. Hope you are having a great day.

Does your USA goldfinch have a red head in summer? Ours has a red head all year, although a bit paler in winter. Lovely to see this one.

Hi, no these guys don’t get the red head and like European Goldfinch but are similar in size and like yours do typically get paler in winter. This guy was a bit more colorful than his neighbors in the thistle right next to him.Hope you are having a great day.

What a marvellous photo, I am thrilled cos today I got to see an american Goldfinch, I didn’t even know these little guys were in America also. Our British ones are beautiful too, a little different too.

Hi Isabelle, we don’t see very many goldfinch where we live so the the one in the photo was a treat. I have noticed the differences between the one’s we have in the US and the British variety and your have more colors. Very nice birds.

I am so glad you got to see this one, even more so that you shared this photo here, I got to see a bird familiar and yet different at once :0) Our ones are common but still as delightful, I instantly recognised this one as a goldfinch, its wings gave him away, buy yeah their colouring on their heads is so much different. I love both yours and ours as much, but I am a bit of a bird geek :0)
