Even with ears up and eyes peeled Mom still assumes the role of crossing guard for two adolescent Mule Deer. Great Sand Dunes National Park, 2015. So much to learn so little time.
Nice capture. I like this because despite the typical “caught in the headlights” pose the two deer are not looking into the lens and mom’s position and outstretched neck adds a bit of a sense of action.
Thanks David, in a way they were caught in the headlights as we were leaving the Sand Dunes that evening but it was like were observing a teaching moment from Mom to the adolescents. The kids were kind of like aw…Mom we know about cars but she was holding them back just the same. Hope you have a great weekend.
Great capture, Mike. What sweet and innocent faces. Even though they are twins, they look very different, one has a much broader forehead. Male vs. female perhaps?
Hi Eliza, Good observation. I had not noticed and you could be right. I guess I did not spend enough time to really find out. I am always a bit concerned about staying around too long when I know the animals are on to my photographic antics. Hope you have a great weekend.
A great photograph, like a family portrait!
