From Wikipedia:
The ten-lined June beetle (Polyphylla decemlineata), also known as the watermelon beetle, is a scarab beetle, living in the western United States and Canada. The adults are attracted to light and feed on foliage. They can make a hissing sound when touched or otherwise disturbed, which can resemble the hissing of a bat.

That’s a cool looking beetle. Nature has evolved some interesting characters.

Hi Jim, yes so much diversity. Too bad we are eliminating most of it to our detriment.

HI, My wife remembers several of these guys hanging on the screens of her house growing up as well. However these days the beetles around here seem sparse.

More development less habitat for non-human things… and so it goes. Very troubling.
