A young Black Bear using their extraordinary sense of smell takes some time stop and sniff the berries. Snowberries to be exact. He decided to pass but snowberries are an important food source for many birds in winter. Snowberries are also but considered poisonous to humans.
Beautiful shot, Mike. They must be eating machines this time of year, getting ready for the winter ahead.
Most berries I think are poisonous to humans. I wish that weren’t the case. The only berries I feel safe to eat is wild raspberries and blueberries and mulberries. If you can find chokecherries, they are safe, however, many berries that look like chokecherries are very bitter and probably poisonous.
One of the things I miss most about the Upper Midwest and Canada is the chance to see black bears. I know they can cause mischief, but I’ve always felt ecstatic upon glimpsing them in the wild.
