Fast Forward

Avoce21

Although it might be several months before we see an American Avocet it sure feels like their arrival is right around the corner. February this year has felt more like late spring than late winter.

Spring time is Rabbit time. Last weekend we saw plenty of healthy rabbits roaming the sagebrush and grasslands of the Arapahoe Wildlife Refuge as well as plenty of Hawks looking for an easy meal. Luckily for this guy he stayed on guard and was reluctant to stray too far from the cover of the sage.

An Adult and a Juvenile White Faced Ibis Preen in the morning light Near Arapahoe National Wildlife Refuge in Walden Colorado.

While driving some backroads a few weekends ago a small group of White Faced Ibis few right over the car and landed in a small pond next to the road. We pulled a quick U-turn and got a chance to observe these guys for awhile. Just like each of our previous Ibis encounters it was short lived as they preened for 10-15 minutes and then flew off. They are amazing birds and that plumage.

One after another

We spent Memorial Day weekend out looking for migratory birds in Northern Colorado. This May it has been unusually cold and snowy and Memorial day weekend was no exception as one after another we were hit by short storms dropping a little Graupel and then blowing quickly out. We must have experienced about 10-15 in one single day. It was clear summer will come a bit latter this year to the high plains in North Park, CO.
