It’s a curious thing..always spinning round and round on our axis… around the sun we go yet never really aware of it. For some reason this small snippet of landscape reminded me we are indeed moving along in a circular path and it’s always nice to be reminded of how things are.
While the nuthatches and chickadees visit the spruce trees in droves each winter we typically see only one or maybe two Brown Creepers busy foraging in the trees. We suspect they are after the seed that the nuthatches have just hidden.
Easy pickings or are they still searching for insects?
A young White Tailed Buck resting quietly on a snowy morning. From the looks of his antlers he has had a few tussles with other young buck this fall. Now that the rut is over it’s time to relax and make it though the winter.
Looking like it just finished a meal this Red tailed Hawk was right back at it. Watching the fields intently for a mouse to stir and trying to make the most of the short days this time of year.
Another day another 100 pine cones as this Squirrel prepares for winter.

Two young bucks, equally matched, practice their game on a late fall afternoon.
While not quite ready to face off with the big bull elk these guys will have their day.
Face to face with the Ravens Beard and a tidy well kept beard to boot.
Hey, who’s that poking his head up out from behind a shrubby berm along the road. None other than our old friend the Pheasant. Just look at that all that color packed into a single bird.
We only got a quick look as he took off like a road runner across a snow covered road and into the brush on the other side but a look that will be remembered.
Watching the earth breath in and out reminds me that this system is alive.
Alive in a way we might not fully understand as the pieces and connections are known yet the interactions a complex.
We have the knowledge yet lack the understanding or so it seems.
How to make it understood is a question we seem to struggle with. Perhaps seeing and observing can help in some way soften the mind to consider complex ideas and then understanding will follow. Time spent just looking is thus time well spent.

A favorite winter companion who always brings a smile to the morning is a Mountain Cottontail we have affectionately named Bunn. While Bunn is invariably more than one we have settled on calling them all Bunn. Hey, it just is fun to say. With a cup a coffee in hand we scout the windows each morning to say hello to our crepuscular friend.
