Simply Summer
It’s mid-July and the forest near my home has quieted down. On our daily walk we begin to pay more attention to those things that define a July day. Most are simple and I often overlook them.
Like the fascinating home of a spittle worm.
or a Dragonfly resting on a branch.
And how many times I walk right past a dandelion going to seed without stopping to take its photo. A true disservice to that dandelion which has put a lifetime into become such a beautiful thing.
Sometimes it is the simple things that make you say it’s simply summer today.
Hey Skipper
A Little Orange Skipper sampling the summer buffet of flowers. First on the clover and then on the milkweed as the late afternoon sun begins to turn the clock on another beautiful day.

The water on the pond is just a bit stiller.
The dragonflies are out in force and the water lilies are in bloom.
Summer delivered.
Good Catch
Terns are one our favorites to watch hunting. So elegant and graceful yet powerful and precise.
A Forsters Tern appears to make the catch of a small minnow where X marks the spot.

Brilliant
I never tire of the brilliant color of a Male Western Tanager. We recently got to see a nice group of 5-6 males hanging out in trees of a thickly forested area. They were busy moving about foraging but luckily we did get a nice photo or two when they moved between the branches whereas the females although present remained quite hidden.
Prairie Smoke
One of our favorite wildflower is Prairie Smoke (Geum triflorum). Gazing into a field of these flowers is like watching a full on action movie yet motion is only implied.
Chestnut-Backed Chickadee
Hearing the Chickadees calling in the trees above our heads we expected to look up and see either a black-capped or mountain chickadee as we had seen them earlier this day. However to our surprise we we greeted by this little Chestnut-Backed Chickadee looking down at us and hunting insects just above our heads.
The all about birds website starts their description of this bird by calling them handsome and I would have to whole heartedly agree with that.
