Songs of Spring
Listening to a a song Sparrow singing the praises of Spring is a fine way to spend a weekend morning.

Long Billed Curlew
This was the first time I have had the pleasure to see a Long Billed Curlew and one I will always remember. What an amazing bill these birds have and it is perfectly suited to finding food in the grassy-marshy environments they habit.
This bird foraged in the field for a bit but did not stay around very long. Flying with a bill that long must be a feat in and of itself yet when this bird departed their flight was as elegant as could be.
New Coots in the pond.
Last week we watched these little fuzz balls with a face only a mother Coot could love darting into and then back out of the reeds lining a small pond.
Fuzzy and cute there is nothing like a newly hatched Coot.
Listening to Frogs
On a quiet days drive between diverse landscapes we listened to frogs at each destination. Some expected,
some unexpected,
and one a complete surprise.
Although we never saw a single frog that day their song still lingers on. Ribbit!
Yellow Rumped (Myrtle) Warbler
A male Yellow Rumped Warbler of the Myrtle variety give us both a right and left profile as we followed him through the woods as he passed through our area on his spring migration. These little guys only hang around for a few weeks so it was nice albeit frustrating at times to get a little looks as these every busy and moving little birds.

Avocet, mud and barbed wire
Although there were cleaner looking ponds in the area this Avocet seemed to prefer this muddy roadside pond surrounded by a barbed wire fence. I guess the foraging must have been good despite the muddy waters.
Hare
Sitting quietly in the grass and staying out of harms way. We spotted this good looking guy on drive through Arapaho National Wildlife Refuge on a silent spring day.

Seeking Refuge
Finding a place to be safe and free from danger is getting harder as vital habitat decreases for animals with each passing day. Wildlife refuges provide animals the space they deserve. They can be large or small yet provide a vital service for all.
The Charmer
Some guys just know that they have the stuff to get the ladies and this is one of those guys…The Charmer. There were numerous Red Winged Blackbirds on the pond this day all strutting there stuff but to my untrained eye, heck i’m a human not a female Red Winged Blackbird, this guy just stood out.
He sang his song like no others birds on the pond and with a style non could match.
When he finished singing he put his brilliant red wings on display which none of the other males were doing. Most just sang and sang.
Yes…this guy knows he is The Charmer.
