This gal was perched high on a cattail checking out the males who were singing their hearts out for a mate. Nothing like hearing a chorus of yellow headed blackbirds singing away to let you know that spring is here.

Beautiful detail and gorgeous DOF!

Thanks Laura, this gal would fly to her perch when the males were singing and after checking them out would dart back into the marsh. We were able to stake out a good spot to watch as she repeated this action several times. Fun to watch for sure. Hope your week is off to a great start.

I tried taking hummingbird shots yesterday for the first time. I realize I need to be on manual focus, pointed near the feeder so I don’t have to wait for my slow lens to focus. I need a 2.8 lens! I love a good bird shot. π What lens did you use?

Hummingbirds must be tough unless they are hovering at a feeder or flower and I would expect a fast lens and maybe some lighting enhancements would be required. We used a 400mm nikon lens for that shot.

I figured you had a longer focal length although I’m on a DX so my 300mm is longer. But my lens isn’t that fast. I need more glass. π

I saw Nikon has a 800mm lens for only about $18,000. π
I do think many of the better hummingbird shots are done with strobes.

oh only $18K? lol Not in this lifetime! I’ll have to look that up using strobes. I don’t know anything about it.

Probably wigs more than a small car as well. Better just to try and sneak up on the little birds instead and more fun.

We have a family of yellow hammers visit our garden. At first we thought they were sparrows daubed with yellow paint as we’d never seen one before. Their song is wonderful too.

Right now we have no birds visiting our yard as the neighborhood has been populated with several cats which roam into any yard they choose. Hearing a song on a regular basis would be a treat right now.

Thanks, the males are very colorful as well and a real treat to see and although a bit squeeky their song is a true reminder of spring for me.

Wonderful photo! I went to allaboutbirds.org to listen to their call – ouch, squeaky! I imagine a bunch of them would be a cacophony! For you, no matter, it means spring!

Said tongue in cheek…it is a good kind of squeak. π
