While hiking along the pacific coast on a very windy day we encountered big globs of sea foam, some as big as a softball, being blown up from the sea and over a 50 ft cliff we were looking over. The foamy blobs came whizzing over our heads and then came crashing into the ground. We had a great time watching and trying to capture this experience. Thinking back, these simple experiences that are random and transient directly define the essence of life.
It’s actually a type of algae that when whipped up by the wind, creates these brownish foam blobs!
I’ve seen surge channels filled with this stuff! A wave will move through in slow motion!
Cool to watch but stinky if you get it on you!

Thanks for the info. I did get the business end of a few of those blobs of algae when trying to photograph them and they did have a bit of a fragrant smell.
