We see this Black Crowned Night Heron at the same spot along the South Platte river almost every evening in the summer patiently working the water for a meal.

That’s an interesting bird. I don’t think I have ever seen this one before. Gorgeous photo! It’s almost as if you were laying in the river shooting up at him!

What is cool is that for years I probably did not notice they were around but once I identified one I see them all the time. In the day they are usually hanging out in well camouflaged tree but when early evening rolls around they start to hang out in the river along the bike path on the commute and fish.

Beautiful! I adore these fellows. On fabulously steamy, noir nights, I go about and meander along amongst the fishermen that cluster over the black waters of the causeway- there are these charming night-herons, bobbing about on the railing, hoping to catch a wee taste of fish, their blazing orange eyes beaming through the night, illuminated in the fulgent flash of gauzy headlights- oooo I’d like to capture one someday. Gorgeous shot.

Love the Heron and I really like the background in this image. What patience these guys have.

I do wish I had the patience of these Herons. I try to sit and wait for a opportunity to catch them making a catch but usually give too soon.

I would not have realised he was a heron with those shortish legs! He is lovely, great shot 🙂

Thanks Wendy, he is one of several night herons we see rising along the river in town on a regular basis. This guy like to hang out just below a little dam and wait for the fish to swim by.

hanks, it always helps when the birds cooperate by holding so still and this guys was like a statue waiting for his dinner to swim by.

Yea, it’s so hard to get them in one pose for even a second, you have used the opportunity perfectly 🙂

It must be a good hunting spot. Great capture.

Hi Eliza, I do think the hunting is good as we have seen him pull out a crayfish a duple of times but never got a non-blurry shot.

Beautiful shot and bird. I recently saw yellow crested night herons for the first time. Lovely birds.

Hi, we don’ have yellow crested night herons around us but I would love to see one sometime. Are they similar in size to the black crowned ones?

I am not sure since I haven’t seen a black crested one but they looked about the size of a small heron. See link
