Until just a few weeks ago Swallowtails filled the air floating by often gliding up into the canopy and out of sight just as quickly as they appeared making photographs initially hard to come by.
However as days went on and with the butterfly bush calling the swallowtails in we got ample time to sit and observe at least three species of swallowtails in depth.
One one afternoons drive on a dusty old dirt road our path was even block by a congregation of Swallowtails which looked to include several species including the Pale Swallowtail, Western Tiger Swallowtail, Canadian Tiger Swallowtail and the Old-World Swallowtail.
Swallowtails block the way along an old dirt road.
A Western Tiger and Pale Swallowtail getting acquainted.
We saw a large number of them at a puddle in a parking lot at Sinks Canyon WY.
Puddles are indeed magnets for butterflies.
Great shots – particularly the ones contrasting their colour on the dirt road. Thanks, Mike!
Thanks, it was a fun experience to have so many they blocked the road and were very reluctant to leave.
Their beauty is amazing. Love the vivid blue and orange on the tail. Esp. like the shot of them ‘puddling.’
Yes, swallowtails are quite the sight and seeing multiple species was a fun experience.
I’ve never seen so many kinds together at once. I did see my first Zebra swallowtail this summer, on a puddle in a muddy parking lot. They definitely love puddles.
It is funny how puddles along dirt toads draw so many butterflies.
Photogenic
Yes, very photogenic butterflies. Hope you have a great weekend.
& you also 😀
Thanks it was a nice weekend and the week has started well.
So utterly delightful.
Thanks.
I love the roadblock picture. these are great.
It was something to have your way blocked by butterflies. Although in reality we were quite pleased to stop the car, get out and watch them for awhile. Have a great weekend.
