Peekin’ Pekin

Peekin_pekin

A domestic Pekin duck peeking out from behind the shrubs on the local pond. Last year the pond was visited by a domestic mandarin this year it looks like a Pekin has made this place his home. Not sure if these domesticated ducks flew the coop or were abandoned but it is fun to see them join the mix of winter visitors which are just starting to arrive.

Warming

Marmot_2 Although striking a similar pose to the chillin’ Prairie Dog posted earlier this week, this Red Bellied Marmot was warming in the rays of the sun, which is slowly loosing that heating power, after a early fall snow blankets the high country the previous day.

Chillin

Chillin

Usually Prairie Dogs are busy scurrying about from hole to hole feeding and digging. This guy seemed to just be carefree and chillin’ on his front porch on a late summer afternoon and enjoying the warm sun and expansive prairie view. He does look well fed and ready for the upcoming winter. Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge.

TIQRIGANIANNIG

I have been trying to find the Greenlandic Inuit words used for the animals I saw on last summers kayak trip to East Greenland.  The word Tiqiganiannig is what I get from Professor Google for the Arctic Fox. If anyone can confirm this I would appreciate it. This Arctic Fox was enjoying the sunlight with a blue sea behind on a wonderful summer day in East Greenland.

Passing Glance

While out on a recent hike we were treated to a quick glance by a cautious Red Fox who then quickly slipped behind the bushes and out of sight. A moment in time but a moment not forgotten. Red Rocks Lakes National Wildlife Refuge, Montana.

In The Willows

BUll_moose_7

You never know what you will find hidden in the willows is what this guy was probably thinking when he noticed we were peeking in from the edge of his terrain. It always amazes me just how easy a creature the size of the moose can disappear from your sight with a simple step or two into the willows. Photographed near Cottonwood pass in Colorado.

Tired Pup

tired_pup_1

The summer heat and a big yard project has me feeling a bit like this pup that left its pen in the town of Tasiilaq and followed our group on a very long demanding hike. Near the end of the hike we had to negotiate a cliff band which left this pup with a long walk back to town in the other direction. Don’t worry he had a experienced older sibling along and I am sure they easily made it back, albeit a bit more tired than in the photo. Tasiilaq, East Greenland.
