A Northern Rough Winged Swallow settles down next to a Barn Swallow for a much needed rest after buzzing about trying to catch some early season insects hatching on a small pond.

Last of the day
We spotted this Belted Kingfisher catching the last rays of late February sunlight as we were near the end of an afternoon walk. We regularly see a Kingfisher along this stretch of the river but it is very mindful of our presence and usually keeps just out of photo range. This day we were able to get a step closer but just barley close enough for a photo. Clear Creek, Denver CO.
Veiled Sunrise
Although the morning sunrise was veiled by clouds the result was magical and fitting nonetheless. Kyuquot Sound, Vancouver Island, BC.
First Finch
It may be close to March but it feels like mid-to-late April. The tulips are pushing up leaves before the crocus have bloomed and the Finches have displaced the Junco and Chickadee in the trees round the neighborhood.
Snow Cone
Hot water bubbling up through the ice on Yellowstone Lake. A snow cone of a very different variety…but refreshing nonetheless on a cold winter’s day.
Fast Forward
Although it might be several months before we see an American Avocet it sure feels like their arrival is right around the corner. February this year has felt more like late spring than late winter.
