A Northern Rough Winged Swallow settles down next to a Barn Swallow for a much needed rest after buzzing about trying to catch some early season insects hatching on a small pond.
Wow, Mike, you had to be very quick to get this shot. It’s great to see the close-up features of both of these species, they’re usually soaring, and often high.
I love this combination as well as the fact that you identify the birds. I just returned home from abroad and haven’t moved into my home where I have my “bird book” buried somewhere in a box in the attic. Of course I am more of a bird photographer than a hardcore birder!
I hear yo u on being more of a bird photographer than a birder. It is a fine line but most of the time the photo will come first and the bird ID second.
Hi, they were in motion most of the time and trying to capture that made my head spin. Luckily every now and then they landed on a branch like this one as we were able to et a fews taking a break.
Swallows are among my most favorite birds. As I recall, yours arrived shortly before mine did, so that must mean I’ll be seeing ours any day now – yay! 🙂
Thanks, there were also violet greens flying around that day but they just would not land with the other guys. Would have been great to get three different swallows all on the same branch.
Thanks Eli, we enjoy sharing what we see out there and are humbled that you enjoyed what we posted. Hope you have a wonderful weekend and thanks for taking the time to leave some feedback as we really appreciate it.

Thanks Jet, yes those little bugger fly fast. We just staked out a branch they seemed to like landing on and waited.
Very nice juxtaposition . Almost looks as though you desaturated the color for everything except the barn swallow.
Thanks David, no desaturation just the natural background as the leaves were still down and it was an overcast day.

For sure! Nice to hear from you.
And thanks again.
Wow two birds in one photo.
It was a treat to get those two in one photo. Hope you are having a great day.
Terrific detail and pose.
Thanks Belinda.
This is amazing. Swallows are mostly seen in lovely motion. To see them captured still is a treat.

Hi Eliza, hope yours arrive soon. the weather this year has been wacky and the timing of the bird arrivals as well.
Very wacky, I agree. Every day new arrivals are winging their way through, so I expect the swallows will be here any day now.
Wacky indeed a dozen more tulips well on their way in the year. About a month earlier than usual.
:-O!
🙂
I love swallows!! Our violet greens should be coming back in about a month. It will be great to have them back. This is a great catch, Mike!

What a lovely shot. Fleeting peace.
Thanks for sharing!
