All alone in the sandhills

Ruminate
When you just have spent the morning eating a big ol’ pile of grass what do you do next…ruminate of course, and while the dictionary example of ruminate is “we sat ruminating on the nature of existence” , this guy appears to figured that question out. Handcrafted?…..no way…this wonder was made with a beak.
Last years Oriole nest none the worse for wear.
Soon the trees will bud out and the leaves will conceal the nests from view.

The Red Eye Flight
A Black Crowned Night Heron with the reddest eye I have seen on one of these guys takes flight over Arapahoe National Wildlife Refuge, Walden, CO.
Fast Forward
Although it might be several months before we see an American Avocet it sure feels like their arrival is right around the corner. February this year has felt more like late spring than late winter.

Although the snow geese and the coyote seemed content to be going about their respective business in the pre-dawn light I think this might change as the day goes on.

Frosty Morning in Monte Vista
A frosty November morning out at the Monte Vista National Wildlife Refuge. With the wetlands frozen over we thought the birding was going to be poor this morning but just as we were about to drive away the Sandhill Cranes arrived.
