Eyes On The Prize

A fine looking pair of coyotes one napping the other keeping watch on a Prairie Dog hole waiting for a meal to appear. Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge, Denver CO.

    1. Thanks Tammy, it was fun watching these two hang out around the Prairie Dog holes. Given the amount of food present I was not the easiest meal on the menu that day. Hope your weekend is fun filled.

  1. Lovely photo. We’ve been seeing coyotes take up residence in some of our nature preserves. So far we still have both red and grey foxes, too. I hope that continues. I understand that in some areas coyotes are beginning to hunt in packs and are potentially filling the gap left by wolves. Pretty neat to see, although I think wolves are inherently more respectful of people. As always, the changes in nature are interesting, aren’t they?

    1. Hi Melissa, It is great to be able to see the interactions of a whole ecosystem like you describe and hopefully the foxes and coyotes are both present within it. I have also heard that coyotes are a little less weary of humans but am not sure if it is inherent or learned. We usually have a report of a coyote having to be removed from local parks each year because of bad behavior but then story misses out on reporting that the humans in the park were trying to feed the coyote when the so called bad behavior occurred. Thanks for the feedback and hope your upcoming week is a great one.
