Seeing a Great Blue Heron take flight on a cold snowy day is a sure way to cure those mid-winter blues. Clear Creek in Denver, CO.

Yea..I agree..trying to work out what that orange ‘blob’ is on his body ,above the wing?

  Hi Paula, the orange is the coloration of the feathers on her wings. Many of the Blue Herons in our area have orange in that area, some a very rusty orange and other brighter.

What huge wings! So beautiful! And that you managed to catch him right while taking flight! I’m really a bit envious about all the wildlife you’ve got there. 🙂
We don’t have much wildlife left, too many humans, too densely populated and not enough space to allow wildlife to bloom. Just some little birds, ducks, swans, hedgehogs, toads, an occasional marten, crows etc.
Some say, wolves are increasingly coming back via the Czech Republic and Russia, but once we had a single wild bear showing up in the alps and everyone panicked and there was a huge uproar in the media, until he got shot after a while. Mad world. 😦

So I always have to go to the zoo to see such beautiful animals you have right at your doorstep. Wonderful. 🙂

  Hi Suzan, although we do get to see magnificent animals and plants close to home as our population grows in our part of the USA we face the same dilemma and everyday we lament the loss of diversity of life in our area. Plants and animals once abundant we now rare and getting rarer every year. It is always a life giving treat to visit a place with abundance of life.

    Thanks, interesting though sad information. I guess this applies for most parts of the world then. But I imagine the region nevertheless with more open space and less cramped than here. But anyway. 🙂

      Yes, we do have more open space than most of the main part of Europe but that is changing. So the only thing to do is get out and enjoy it instead of fretting it away.

  Hi and thanks, to be honest we were only out a short time that afternoon and initially watching some of the Goldeneye ducks. We got lucky and found this guy around the first corner.

Great Photo of a Great Blue. Two days ago, I photographed a juvenile GB in Humboldt Bay just after it speared a steelhead. I watched it devour the fish and snapped it in the process. Nice capture! The orange coloring at the base of the neck almost looks like a little hitchhiker with big eyes under an orange head.

We were surprised to see him on the shore in the snow and we just pulled out the camera when he decided to take off. Right place and right time that day.
