Make no bones about it, I get excited watching the less common waterfowl that overwinter on the local creeks and ponds, but there is just something special about the Mallard. Maybe a comforting familiarity or perhaps their mild demeanor and wonderful quacking. Anyway, this guy sure stood out the other day. Well dressed in his finest breeding feathers saying what needed to be said in such a simple way.

Indeed and they are like a treasure that is mainly hidden from view unless we wait and watch for a bit. Love when they rise up in the water and spread out their wings and the blue appears.

I do like Mallards, but I’ve felt quite the same after finding out that the males sometimes drown the females, accidentally of course, having sex with them.

Beautiful shots, Mike! Mallards are my favorites, for all the reasons you mentioned. I love how their quaking sounds like laughter and how they enjoying splashing around playing, and they are so pretty – both male and female.
