Just this week the Robins have returned and the pre-dawn singing outside the bedroom window has started. His tune seems a bit rough right now, but heck, it’s early and this guy is just perfecting his song. Practice makes perfect.

California Quail
Peeking through the moss cover trees we we found a Male California Quail peeking back at us through the corner of his eyes.
The Red Eye Flight
A Black Crowned Night Heron with the reddest eye I have seen on one of these guys takes flight over Arapahoe National Wildlife Refuge, Walden, CO.
At rest
A Northern Rough Winged Swallow settles down next to a Barn Swallow for a much needed rest after buzzing about trying to catch some early season insects hatching on a small pond.
Last of the day
We spotted this Belted Kingfisher catching the last rays of late February sunlight as we were near the end of an afternoon walk. We regularly see a Kingfisher along this stretch of the river but it is very mindful of our presence and usually keeps just out of photo range. This day we were able to get a step closer but just barley close enough for a photo. Clear Creek, Denver CO.
First Finch
It may be close to March but it feels like mid-to-late April. The tulips are pushing up leaves before the crocus have bloomed and the Finches have displaced the Junco and Chickadee in the trees round the neighborhood.
